The Holistic Approach
What is a Holistic Approach to Wellness?
A holistic approach to health & wellness acknowledges all aspects of a person - not just one small part. The mind, body, and spirit are collectively seen as factors that can affect a person's overall sense of well-being. When these elements are balanced, we feel happy, healthy, and full of life. When they are out of alignment, we feel run-down, overwhelmed, exhausted, "in a slump". The cause(s) can range from an illness, a stressful job, a life transition, a rocky period in a relationship, an injury, a weakened inner spirit, unbalanced nutrition, and beyond. A holistic approach focuses on the causes of stress, pain, and weakness, and uses this information to help restore balance.
Managing Stress With Holistic Wellness
The importance of self-care is often downplayed in the modern world. We feel as if there aren't enough hours in the day to take care of our responsibilities AND ourselves. On many levels we become tired, off-balanced, and stressed. Although some stress can be a positive, motivating factor, chronic stress can cause wear and tear on the body and make existing problems worse.
"According to the American Psychological Association, chronic stress is linked to the six leading causes of death: heart disease, cancer, lung ailments, accidents, cirrhosis of the liver, and suicide". Stress also greatly impacts our thoughts and emotions, and contributes to increased depression, anxiety, irritability, low sex dive, and compulsorily behaviors. All of these factors contribute to an intensification of physical and emotional pain, making stress one of the most negative influences on our health.
